As Paul exhorted Timothy to “devote [him]self to the public reading of Scripture” (1 Tim. 4:13), we invite you to Cambridge House for a time of corporate prayer and reading aloud the Word of God. All are welcome, whether to read or simply to listen. Light refreshments provided.
Environmental Stewardship & the Church with Dr. Josh Puzey
When: Fridays, 2:30-3:30 PM

In 1967, historian Lynn White Jr. argued that medieval Western Christianity, in its attitude toward nature, paved the way for modern ecological problems, charging the Western Church with an anthropocentrism that devalues the natural world (“The Historical Roots of our Ecologic Crisis”). Was White correct? Is the Christian West to blame? More broadly, how does our theology affect how we steward our natural environments? How does the earth and its non-human inhabitants fit into the biblical narrative? Does our view of the new heavens and the new earth influence the ways in which we presently attend to the things of this world?
Join Dr. Josh Puzey, Associate Professor of Biology, for a discussion on these questions and more. This semester, we will first focus on themes of eschatology and the resurrection using N.T. Wright’s Surprised by Hope. Open to all students.

Dr. Jim Thomas has worked as an epidemiologist and ethicist in more than 40 countries. While in Ghana to coordinate with the World Health Organization on data collection following an Ebola epidemic, he visited Elmina Fort. Elmina is where Africans were enslaved and held to be put on ships to the Americas. Seeing a church in Elmina was a shock to Jim's Christian faith. On Wednesday, April 23rd at 7 PM, he will talk about how he processed that shock over the following years and how it affects his international work now.

Jesus of Nazereth preached about the coming kingdom of God and what it would be like. But would this kingdom have an economic system? In this talk, Dr. Stephen Day will discuss Jesus' economic assumptions, his economic logic, and descriptions of how God's kingdom would work.
